blind people driving cars?

Well, I was talking to someone on for the people a few months ago, and he was talking about programmable cars for the blind. He said they already had some in california they were trying out. I personally don't think it would work. He said it would go anywhere you wanted to go, you just had to program it.It sounded like it would be very chancey and very difficult. He said well, you have places to go, just like you have places to go on your computer. Like if you wanted to go to a crogers store, you'd program in, krogers. I told my mom about it, and she said, you'd end up at a kroger store 200 miles away. I suddenly had a comic flash of it being like windows 98, and typing, burger king, and it would say burger king, listing 1 of 500 results, lol. The comic vision made me giggle, heeheehee, the thought of it's just too funny.

Thanks Alison, the whole thing struck me silly. As for me, I'd rather leave the driving to sighted people, the know what they're doing, and where they're going, hahaha.

Just because they're sighted doesn't know they 1) know what they're doing, and 2) know where they're going... I'm a prime example of that. Hehe... I'm just kidding :-).

Post 5 by Jess227 on Saturday, 22-Jan-2005 23:10:13

Yup I get asked while I'm on my walk or going to a friends house "Exuse me do you know where point b is from point a?" It's like they expect you to give directions when you don't know if the dude is doing or thinking. As far as driving: The only time I was allowed in the passenger seat was to test the brake lites for my dad as he had to fix one of the lights. All I did was lightly push the brake petal down and my time behind the drivers seat was finished.

Well that would be something for a blind person to be able to drive a car. With technology the way it is these days, it wouldn't be that difficult. That makes me think of Knight Rider, that show from the 1980s for those that don't know, just giving voice commands to where you want to go.

Post 8 by kool_turk (This site is so "educational") on Saturday, 22-Jan-2005 23:38:21

I'd rather trust a sighted person than a computer when it comes to driving.

Post 9 by Godzilla-On-Toast (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 23-Jan-2005 0:33:29

Yeah, but consider the cost. Since it's an adaptive thing that will be made in small quantities for a small market, just think of the most expensive car you can and multiply that figure by at least five if not ten. And that's the basic model! LOL!

Post 10 by Caitlin (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 23-Jan-2005 0:59:19

Lol thsi sounds funny! I'd love to be behind th wheel of a car man ehehhehe!!! Caitlin

Hmm, I've driven with my husband's assistance. He simply told me what we were coming up to. LOL. That knowledge makes most people nervous, but I loved it. As for the cars, expensive most likely, that's the way most of the adaptive equipment is for us. However, it is quite doable. Being a programmer I can at least have some basic ideas on how to accomplish the task. Especially since we have the GPS or something like that...Global Posissioning System. I think it will be great, and I'm looking forward to giving it a, um, test drive. *smile*

Post 12 by Puggle (I love my life!) on Sunday, 23-Jan-2005 2:41:10

I've driven before, once a few years ago on a friends farm. It's the mose exilerating feeling. If a car ever comes onto the market that blinkies can drive, I'll be going straight to the bank to get a loan to buy one. I don't care what the cost is.

How boring I cant think of anything less rewarding than sitting back while the car does all the work, there are other more exciting ways in which we can enjoy that vital element of being in a car Driver Involvement.
..............................................
Off roading I'd recomend it to any blind/vi punter keen on cars,or perhaps drag racing 100 yards in a straight line how can you go wrong, personally It bores me to tears, but then I prefer steep undulating ground.

I'm jealous of you Witchcraft I'd love to do that! Caitlin

Post 18 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 23-Jan-2005 18:58:04

Well, I agree with Kool_turk, better leave the driving to a sighted person than acomputer. And yeah Labyrinth, probably only the richest person in the world could afford a car like that. And yes Suzanne, lol, I know sighted people have car accidents, but how much worse would the car accident be if you couldn't see where you were going? or a car just ahead of you or behind you? Jessica I bet that was scarey when the car jumped like that. It would scare me too. As for being bored sitting there and letting the car do all the driving, I prefer boredom and safety, versus excitement and danger. Think how you'd feel if youtried your hand at manipulating the car yourself, and you had a head on collision and killed someone? all because you got bored letting the car drive you.

Witchcraft, do you drive in busy streets, or just desserted areas, with y9oru husband's help? Rotflflflflflfllhlhlhlhlhl!

Post 20 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 23-Jan-2005 22:37:53

I bet it's challenging, trying to stop and go the very second your husband says, stop, go. I think I remember posting that topic about dreaming I was driving a car once. I don't know why I had such a dream, lol, but at least there was no one else except me on the road, so at least I didn't get killed, hahaha.
wonderwoman

Post 21 by Caitlin (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 23-Jan-2005 22:57:33

I know. I'd get myself killed. I love bumepr cars though. I like to run into the sides of the little area place. Once, there was a sign that said "Only go one way" with an arrow. My friend who was in the car with me, (the passenger seat) told me about it but I went both ways anyway. And I ran into the sign that sais "one way" going the wrong way! Lol! Isnt' that classic? Caitlin

Post 22 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 23-Jan-2005 23:01:18

You mean you actually drove a car while you had a friend with you? Yeah, I'd definitely get killed right off. I can just hear the huge car pile up now. A car would run in to me, then another car would run in to that car, and so on. I guess you went one way alright, lol.

I've tried the busy streets deal, but that was to nerve racking, and WW, my husband figured out how soon to tell me to stop and so on. I much prefer driving on the highways and so on...And as far as letting the sighted always do the work. Why should we depend on them for everything? Especially if the technology comes out to let us do it ourselves? Yes, right now I depend on my husband to get me places, but I guarantee you if the technology comes out I'll do my best to get it. No more having to wait on him to get out of bed when we need something for breakfast, no more waiting on him when I have to go to schools or want to go over to a friends.

Post 24 by asdfghjkl (Account disabled) on Monday, 24-Jan-2005 7:51:52

well ive had dreams that ive driven my dads car, or my mom was driving (shes blind 2) or no 1 was driving aaahhh!...

Post 25 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 24-Jan-2005 18:43:30

Well I understand where you're coming fromwitch craft, but driving can be really dangerous, and computers just aren't that reliable. The whole mechanism can be faulty, and something can go wrong without warning. It's great not to have to depend on a sighted person for everything, but I'm not sure a computerized car could be programmed to know a stop sign or stop light. Though there are a lot of things it would be nice to do on my own, I'm not sure driving is one of them.
wonderwoman,
yes songwriter, dreams usually have no logic, do they? haha.

Well, people in general make mistakes, so it wouldn't be any different. I would love to have my own car, do where ever I want to go, and when ever I want.

Post 27 by Miss Gorgeous (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Sunday, 21-Aug-2005 22:27:05

Hey all. I drove a car twice and it was amazing. The first time was in the go carts race. I was over taking a car that was next to me and I end up really really fast. When I reach the finish line I forgot to hit the breaks and I end up bumping the car in front of me. The second time was a real car. Me and my friend went to our high school. Well it was summer time that’s why the parking lot was vacant. Anyway. When I was driving and turning to the right I end up turning all the way. This time I forgot to pull the one going to the back and as always I forgot to break in the right time and I end up using the breaks and my heart almost stop. I think I need to read some more driving books and or practice driving. Its fun. I like joy rides. Fast cars are awesome. If I get a car in the future, I want it to be a sports car.

Post 28 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 30-Sep-2005 0:39:14

but true_17,you aren't totally blind then, are you? You'd have to have someone with you at all times, and even with someone right there, saying, stop, go, turn, it would be almost impossible driving that way without having a serious accident.

I think I would leave the driving up to someone who is fully sighted, although I do have some sight.

I have been driving in a big farm paddoc once, in an old manual ute one of my uncles owned. It was so awesom, having this huge paddoc to drive around in, and having to do the gears, the clutch and all. Nearly crashed into a fence however, which was funny but still quite fun.

well, I think crashing in to things is scarey. It even scares me when the driver slams on brakes, and it's awful when they have to do it and you don't even know they're going to do it, until it's done. I'd rather leave the driving to sighted people too. I can just see me now. The car behind me would smash in to me, then the car behind him or her would slam in to them, and before you know it, there'd be a 100 car smash up.

I like the idea of a car that we can programme it where to go. As other people said we wouldn't depend on people any more or taxi and it would save us some money. But if there was such a car i would wait maybe a few years to see if they would be any accidents and if there was safe i would get it eventualy.

Post 32 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Monday, 28-Nov-2005 14:46:13

That would be kind of cool, as long as there were also a regular way to drive it as well, and you could switch between the two settings. )That's if the car could go automatically of course. Also, I'd be nervous to drive it alone, because you never know how some other drivers are, and how could the car detect something unpredictable like that?. So, I don't think I'd like an automatic-driving car, but if it were something in between like being able to detect what's around it and maybe would just tell you where and when to turn, I might try it out. But it would take some time before I felt comfortable driving alone, and the area would have to be familiar to me at that point.

Post 33 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 28-Nov-2005 19:10:07

exactly. I'm not sure I could ever be brave enough to try an automatic driving car. Someone told me about it, and he was talking about how you would have places to go like you have places to go on your computer, and every time I think of it, I envision typing in burger king, and a list coming up, a listview like the ones that comes up in programs and it says, burger king, 300 matches found. Then there'd be a combo box of the list of states, then a list of cities for each state, and the image had me laughing. As nice as it would be to be 100 percent independent of sighted people, I don't think it would work.

Post 34 by icequeen (move over school!) on Monday, 28-Nov-2005 19:25:42

I think once they fine tune such a system, it will be incredible!

Post 35 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Monday, 28-Nov-2005 19:55:10

Maybe this idea with the automatic car would work if on the road they created special lanes for just these types of car to move on so any other drivers wouldn't be allowed to do that. That maybe would reduce the risk of an accident on the road but there are always drivers that don't care about the rules.

Post 36 by bozmagic (The rottie's your best friend if you want him/her to be, lol.) on Saturday, 08-Apr-2006 17:34:34

I think the automatic car would be brilliant! I wouldn't have to rely on my mum or my mates, parents if I wanted to go and stay with them. I'd just put let's say, Kay's post code or even her full address in to a qwerty keyboard-type thing which would replace the stearing wheel, put my base box on as loud as it would go and vroom'm'm'm'm'm'm'm! I'm off when I hit Enter! lol.

Post 37 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Sunday, 01-Apr-2007 17:17:30

Post 38 by Dubstep1984 (I just keep on posting!) on Monday, 31-Dec-2007 19:35:27

wooooo! that would rock headwig. i would do the same thing but i would have the qwerty keyboard for typing in my destination and a steeringwheel that would give you the feel of driving even though the computer did it for u

Post 39 by Dubstep1984 (I just keep on posting!) on Monday, 31-Dec-2007 19:38:38

actually the way that the car would detect things around is a lazer that guided the car and that was an object detecter. i think that things like that do exist. not sure though
